Third places are citizen spaces where different publics, skills, resources, working methods, innovative materials, etc. combine and hybridize, making each of them unique spaces, claimed as such and attached to a territory. With the wind in their sails, there were already more than 3,500 of them on French territory in 2022.

The third places address fundamental issues: the question of ownership and use, health, education, food, the right to experiment, multifunctionality, networking, as well as the very real risks of institutionalisation and standardisation and instrumentalisation, etc.

"Above all, third places are the sign of a crisis in our institutions, which were designed in industrial societies according to a vertical and sectoral model. They decompartmentalise activities as well as audiences, recompose the relationship to work, bring back activities in fragile territories, restore social ties or contribute to the ecological transition"<ref>Les tiers lieux : un chemin vers les communs? Timothée Duverger, Geneviève Fontaine, August 2022 </ref>.
They claim to be actors of the transition on a given territory, deeply connected to solidarity economy, popular education and the commons at the same time. Thus they draw on the more political dimensions of collective deliberation and action, organisation around resources, knowledge, spaces and a presence in the public space.
{{Ebauche}}

The cooperative principle is often put forward as a method of organizations governance and management. However, it can also be conceptualised and put into practice as inter-organisational cooperation within a given territory.

From an '''economic''' point of view, territorial cooperation then becomes a method of coordination between stakeholders, or even a method of regulation and allocation of resources that is more efficient and less exclusionary than competition (market) or public administration (redistribution). And at the same time, a '''political''' project to reappropriate the territory in order to find solutions to existing fragmentation. It has also become a '''priority for SSE policies''', which can be applied in different ways depending on the context, with local authorities playing an active role in the experimentations...

Territorial cooperation is characterised by the participation and contributions of the various stakeholders (SSE entrepreneurships, associations, SSE networks, Local authorities, SMEs, researchers, etc), without hierarchical relations, in the service of the ecological transition, the relocation and local anchoring of activities and employment and/or local development, etc.

It is based on the pooling of shared problems in a given area, the interdependence of activities, the combination of interests and the complementarity of skills.

It can take the form of a network based on an awareness of the challenges and constraints of interdependences, or be structured voluntarily between people and organisations in a meta-organisation or an intermediary place, with a legal status. <ref>Definition from Appui à l’émergence et au développement d’initiatives d’économie solidaire, MES, 2023</ref>

"an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise".
For its values and principles, see [https://www.ica.coop/en/cooperatives/cooperative-identity here].
It can be applied to all sectors of activity : trade, agriculture, alimentation, industry, crafts, transport, banking, education, housing, etc.
For whom?:

Usually, the members are the entrepreneurs. For example, farmers can belong to an agricultural cooperative.
Worker cooperatives, as the [[SCOP]] in France, are the only cooperatives where the associate members are the employees, who have the majority of the capital. Some cooperatives have several stakeholders: the workers, but also the beneficiaries of the activity, public authorities, etc. (such as the [[SCIC (Société Coopérative d'Intérêt Collectif)]], in France).
